Ce stade, qui aurait coûté $400 000 000 de dollars et qui peut accueillir 50 000 personnes, a été inauguré le 29 août 2009. La Donbass Arena répond aux critères de la catégorie 4 de l'UEFA, qui identifie les infrastructures de haute qualité. Il s'agit du premier stade ukrainien qui bénéficie d'une telle récompense.
