Le vol 77 American Airlines est un vol intérieur de passagers qui est détourné, le 11 septembre 2001, par cinq terroristes d'Al-Qaïda dans le cadre des attentats du 11 septembre. Ils font délibérément s'écraser l'avion contre le Pentagone à Washington, tuant les 59 autres personnes à bord, et 125 personnes présentes dans la zone d'impact du bâtiment. L'avion impliqué, un Boeing 757-200, faisait le service transcontinental quotidien d'American Airlines entre l'aéroport international de Dulles, à Washington DC, vers l'aéroport international de Los Angeles en Californie.
D'après les conclusions de l'enquête officielle, après une demi-heure de vol, les pirates entrent de force dans le cockpit, et maîtrisent le commandant de bord et le premier officier. Hani Hanjour, un membre d'Al-Qaida et pilote entraîné, reprend le contrôle. Le vol 77 coupa son transpondeur à 8 h 56 et disparut des écrans radar pendant 36 minutes.
