Schönwies è un comune con 1732 abitanti nel distretto di Landeck in Tirolo. Il comune si trova nel distretto giudiziario di Landeck. Schönwies si trova nella valle superiore dell'Inn, tra Landeck e Imst, al confine orientale del distretto. Separato dal prolungato strato roccioso del castello di Kronburg dal bacino di Landeck, il luogo è geograficamente più associato alla zona della valle a ovest di Imst. L'insediamento si estende principalmente nella stretta piana del fondo valle a sud dell'Inn, oltre a ciò ci sono anche insediamenti isolati e zone alpine sui pendii e la frazione di Starkenbach a nord dell'Inn.
