Uno dei più grandi giacimenti di smeraldi in Europa si trova nella valle di Habach presso Bramberg. La ricerca di questi smeraldi da parte dei turisti è tollerata, purché si cerchi con mezzi semplici. Gli smeraldi variano notevolmente nel colore, da verde scuro a verde chiaro con variazioni nei colori blu/ciano. Spesso presentano molte inclusioni, raramente sono cristallini. Lo smeraldo è un membro della famiglia dei berilli. Insieme a diamanti, rubini e zaffiri è una delle tradizionali "grandi quattro" pietre preziose. La parola "smeraldo" deriva dal greco antico: σμάραγδος (smáragdos; “pietra preziosa verde”).
