Artevelde era un uomo d'affari e statista di Gand. Commerciava bestiame, pesce, vino, argento e tessuti. Abitava al Kalandeberg e fu assassinato vicino alla sua abitazione in Paddenhoek il 17 luglio 1345. Alcune versioni menzionano che ciò accadde mentre cercava di fuggire da casa, altre versioni affermano che accadde quando tornò a casa dopo incontri a Damme. Ciò di cui c'è consenso è che sarebbe stato ucciso da Gerard Denijs, maestro della corporazione dei tessitori.
