La posizione della stazione della metropolitana è stata utilizzata fino al 12 gennaio 1998 come capolinea della linea del tram 56. Quando nel 1998 sono iniziati i lavori per l'estensione della metropolitana, è stato deciso di limitare i tram alla fermata Sint-Niklaas e di attivare un servizio navetta sotto forma di autobus tra Erasmus e Sint-Niklaas. La propria sede in Bergensesteenweg è stata anch'essa dismessa, mentre i tram della linea 56 continuavano a circolare con destinazione "Erasmus [H]". Il 15 settembre 2003 è stata messa in servizio la stazione della metropolitana Erasmus come capolinea della linea metropolitana 1B, e la linea del tram 56 è stata limitata a Debussy. Dalla revisione della rete metropolitana nel 2009, la linea metropolitana 5 passa attraverso questa stazione.
