Il Schulensmeer è nato negli anni '70. In quel periodo si stava cercando un'area di estrazione della sabbia per la costruzione dell'autostrada E314 tra Lummen e Aarschot. Nello Schulensbroek era anche previsto un bacino di attesa per una migliore gestione del Demer. Estraendo sabbia nel luogo dove era previsto il bacino, è stato necessario sacrificare solo un'area di terreno agricolo. Il Schulensmeer prende il nome dal villaggio di Schulen che si trova sulla strada tra Hasselt e Diest.
