Le Schulensmeer est né dans les années 1970. À cette époque, un site d'extraction de sable était recherché pour la construction de l'autoroute E314 entre Lummen et Aarschot. Dans le Schulensbroek, un bassin d'attente a également été prévu à ce moment-là pour une meilleure gestion de la Demer. En extrayant le sable à l'emplacement prévu pour le bassin d'attente, il a suffi de sacrifier des terres agricoles à un seul endroit. Le Schulensmeer est nommé d'après le village de Schulen qui se trouve sur la route entre Hasselt et Diest.
