La chiesa sostituì la Chiesa di San Pietro, distrutta da un incendio il 14 agosto 1896. Il re Leopoldo II nutriva grandiosi piani per Ostenda e avrebbe voluto la demolizione di questa chiesa decanale. Ma si scontrò con la resistenza dell'allora decano. Dicerie dei borghesi di Bruges diffusero il pettegolezzo che il re sapesse di più su quell'incendio. Il fatto è che la procura, dopo mesi di indagini, non riuscì a trovare un colpevole. L'unica cosa che resta di questa chiesa è la Peperbus, la torre dietro l'attuale chiesa. Ma ora la prestigiosa chiesa poteva essere costruita. Nel frattempo, fu eretta una chiesa provvisoria accanto alla torre di San Pietro.
