Il Lisseweegs vaartje è un antico corso d'acqua tra Bruges e il mare. Inizialmente c'era tra il mare e il villaggio il "olievliet" e tra Ter Doest e Bruges il "Lissewegeree". Questi due corsi d'acqua furono collegati all'inizio del XIII secolo da un canale scavato, attraverso il tumulo del villaggio, che in alcuni punti si erge per 4 metri sopra il livello del mare! Il vaartje veniva inizialmente utilizzato come strada di approvvigionamento per la pietra blu di Tournai durante la costruzione della chiesa e dell'abbazia. In seguito anche come strada commerciale verso Bruges e verso il mare. A Zwankendamme - l'ex Swaenendamme - c'era una chiusa e un trasferimento. Una pietra data è ancora visibile Anno 1773.
