Il municipio si trova nel cuore della città, nella piazza accogliente della Grote Markt.
Il municipio neoclassico è stato costruito tra il 1870 e il 1873 secondo i piani dell'architetto Trappeniers. L'imponente edificio è stato completamente ristrutturato negli anni settanta in occasione del suo centenario. Alla fine del 2003 sono iniziati nuovi lavori di ristrutturazione, completati nel 2005.
All'interno del municipio si trova una vasta collezione di dipinti, tra cui quelli del famoso Jean-François Portaels e della sua scuola.
Ci sono anche numerosi busti di ex sindaci e il busto del re Alberto realizzato da Rik Poot, un fonditore di bronzo di una famiglia di Vilvoorde, ora famoso in tutto il mondo per le sue sculture in tecnica della cera persa.
