La piazza fu realizzata intorno al 1875, quando il quartiere popolare Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ter-Sneeuw fu demolito e ricostruito, con un completo ridisegno del tracciato stradale. Il nome si riferisce alle libertà costituzionali belghe. Questo vale anche per i nomi delle quattro strade che partono da qui, riferendosi alla libertà di stampa, alla libertà di associazione, alla libertà di religione e alla libertà di istruzione.
