La Walpoort faceva parte delle mura difensive di Gand del XII secolo. L'acqua che scorre qui sotto il ponte proviene dalla Schelda e scorre attraverso il Ketelvest, un canale scavato a metà del XII secolo. La terra estratta dai lavori di scavo fu accumulata dalla parte della città, formando una muraglia. Il Ketelvest era il confine tra il cosiddetto villaggio di Sint-Pietersdorp - che apparteneva all'abbazia - e la città di Gand. Svolta a sinistra all'angolo di Huidevettershoek e scendi le scale verso il sentiero lungo l'acqua per arrivare al Ketelpoort.
