The Walpoort was part of the 12th-century defensive wall of Ghent. The water flowing under the bridge comes from the Scheldt and flows through the Ketelvest, a canal that was dug in the middle of the 12th century. The earth excavated from the digging works was heaped up on the city side, forming a rampart. The Ketelvest was the boundary between the so-called Sint-Pietersdorp - which belonged to the abbey - and the city of Ghent. Turn left at the large Huidevettershoek and go down the stairs to the towpath below to walk along the water to the Ketelpoort.
