La foresta si trova sul Kluisberg, una montagna che si trova proprio al confine linguistico. È la montagna più grande delle Ardenne fiamminghe. Ci sono anche 2 dolmen risalenti all'epoca romana. Durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale ci sono stati molti abbattimenti di alberi nella foresta, i fianchi sono stati in gran parte completamente disboscati. In seguito la foresta è stata ripiantata, per lo più con faggi.
