Plombières, vicino ad Aquisgrana, non si chiama così per caso. Nel XIX secolo lì veniva estratto il piombo. Il Belgio aveva anche miniere di zinco in quella zona. Ma se trovi piombo e zinco, ci sono anche altri metalli che si possono trovare come una sorta di sottoprodotto dell'estrazione di zinco e piombo. Penso all'indio - utilizzato nei display LCD - al gallio e al germanio - utilizzati nei transistor, nei pannelli solari e nei cavi in fibra ottica. Sono mattoni fondamentali per la tecnologia moderna di cui non possiamo quasi più fare a meno. Ma ciò non significa che sia comunque redditizio estrarli.
