Lo scrittore Charles Baudelaire non era un grande amante del Belgio. Sebbene fosse molto entusiasta al suo arrivo a Bruxelles, dopo un po’ espresse molte critiche sulla sua nuova residenza. Ma anche le altre città del Belgio che visitò dovevano subire le sue reprimende. Solo Malines e Namur potevano contare sulla grazia del grande maestro letterario. Nel suo libro Brutopia, Pascal Verbeken cita Baudelaire come segue: "Se Malines non si trovasse in Belgio e fosse abitata da fiamminghi, vorrei viverci e soprattutto morire."
