Aalter, con una superficie di 119 km², è uno dei comuni più grandi della provincia di Fiandre Orientali in Belgio. Si trova nella cosiddetta Meetjesland e ha 29.182 abitanti. I reperti archeologici degli ultimi decenni mostrano che il territorio del comune di Aalter era già abitato in epoca preistorica. Sono stati trovati numerosi reperti in pietra in siti paleontologici che risalgono agli anni 3000-2000 a.C. Gli archeologi hanno anche trovato resti di un'ascia di bronzo, che dopo un'analisi è stata datata tra il 1200 e il 1000 a.C.
