Le fortificazioni di Ypres sono le meglio conservate del nostro paese. La loro storia inizia dieci secoli fa, quando la città sorse sulle rive dello Yser. Inizialmente le fortificazioni non erano altro che una duna di terra con fossati. In seguito vennero costruite mura di pietra e torri. Ancora più tardi crebbero fino a diventare un complesso di bastioni, rinforzi, fossati e mura.
