Las fortificaciones de Ypres son las mejor conservadas de nuestro país. Su historia comienza hace diez siglos, cuando la ciudad surgió a orillas del Ieperlee. Al principio, las fortificaciones no eran más que un terraplén de tierra con fosos. Más tarde se construyeron muros de piedra y torres. Aún más tarde, crecieron hasta convertirse en un complejo conjunto de baluartes, fortificaciones externas, fosos y muros.
