All'inizio della primavera del 1909, Permeke tornò a Latem, dai suoi amici latemesi, ma viveva là in modo piuttosto ritirato e si interessava soprattutto per il tocco pesante e pastoso di Albert Servaes, che conosceva già dai suoi tempi all'accademia di Gand; scambiavano molte idee, divennero amici e dipingevano insieme nella campagna dentro e intorno a Latem. Servaes, peraltro, poteva già essere considerato il "Padre dell'espressionismo fiammingo".
