Il comune rurale è composto da 5 municipalità e un borgo. In totale ci sono 7 nuclei abitativi, poiché la municipalità di Kersbeek-Miskom è costituita da due villaggi ecclesiastici. Nella vasta area valliva della Velpe, i frutteti formano un'immagine familiare. Inoltre, il comune è anche un patchwork agricolo: ampie campagne e pascoli sono molto comuni. Kortenaken vive di allevamento di bestiame, agricoltura e orticoltura. Non ci sono veri nuclei abitativi. È una grande costruzione a striscia da un nucleo all'altro, con dietro un insieme agricolo. Kortenaken è il terzo comune di pere più grande del Belgio e per questo motivo ogni anno arrivano molti lavoratori stagionali per raccogliere/sortire principalmente pere e per potare gli alberi. La grande maggioranza degli abitanti lavoratori è composta da pendolari che devono cercare il loro reddito al di fuori del comune. Il comune conta più di 7.500 abitanti.
