La più antica menzione del luogo appare in un documento del 877 come villa Uscias. Il nome è probabilmente una errata latineizzazione dell'idronimo europeo antico usa-ja. Secondo il documento, scritto dal vescovo di Tournai, fu concessa a Odo, abate dell'abbazia di Corbie, l'autorizzazione a costruire una chiesa a Huise, che in precedenza faceva parte della parrocchia di Mullem. L'abbazia del nord della Francia aveva a Huise importanti possedimenti che, secondo la tradizione, erano stati donati dall santo Adalardo, nato a Huise nell'anno 751, come abate di Corbie all'abbazia.
