Albert Einstein abitò nel 1933 per alcuni mesi a Villa Savoyarde. Dopo un soggiorno come professore ospite negli Stati Uniti, arrivò nel porto di Anversa in viaggio di ritorno verso la Germania nel marzo del 1933. Poiché Adolf Hitler era stato eletto in Germania nello stesso mese, la coppia Einstein decise di non tornare e partì per De Haan, dove si trasferirono nella parte sinistra della villa bifamiliare 'Savoyarde' in Shakespearelaan. In seguito si unirono a loro anche sua figliastra Margot, il suo assistente Walther Mayer e la sua segretaria Helen Dukas. Infine, divenne troppo pericoloso per Einstein anche in Belgio e il 9 settembre 1933 lasciò De Haan in incognito, diretto in Inghilterra dove rimase per un po'. Il 17 ottobre 1933 partì definitivamente per gli Stati Uniti.
