Albert Einstein vivió en 1933 durante unos meses en Villa Savoyarde. Tras una estancia como profesor invitado en los Estados Unidos, llegó en su viaje de regreso a Alemania al puerto de Amberes en marzo de 1933. Como Adolf Hitler había sido elegido en Alemania ese mismo mes, la pareja Einstein decidió no regresar y se trasladó a De Haan, donde se mudaron a la parte izquierda de la casa dúplex 'Savoyarde' en la Avenida Shakespeare. Más tarde también se unieron a ellos su hijastra Margot, su asistente Walther Mayer y su secretaria Helen Dukas. Finalmente, la situación también se volvió demasiado peligrosa para Einstein en Bélgica y el 9 de septiembre de 1933 abandonó De Haan de incógnito, rumbo a Inglaterra donde permaneció un tiempo. El 17 de octubre de 1933 se marchó definitivamente a los Estados Unidos.
