Qui il canale Gent-Ostenda (la Via di Bruges) incontra il Canale di Schipdonk, che è stato costruito su richiesta dell'amministrazione cittadina di Gand nel XIX secolo per tenere l'acqua maleodorante della Leie lontana dalla città. Da Deinze quest'acqua viene deviata in un nuovo canale verso Heist, ma prima attraversa la Via di Bruges. Come soluzione a questo problema, il Canale di Schipdonk è stato fatto passare attraverso tubi (o 'sifone') sotto la Via di Bruges. L'uscita e il sifone sono ancora in uso.
