Hier ontmoet het kanaal Gent-Oostende (de Brugse Vaart) het Schipdonkkanaal, dat op aandringen van het Gentse stadsbestuur in de 19de eeuw werd aangelegd om het stinkende Leiewater uit de stad te houden. Vanaf Deinze wordt dit water afgeleid in een nieuw kanaal naar Heist, maar het kruist eerst de Brugse Vaart. Als oplossing hiervoor werd het Schipdonkkanaal via buizen (of 'siphon') onder de Brugse Vaart getrokken. Sas en siphon zijn nog steeds in gebruik.
