Il Cosmodromo è un osservatorio popolare con un planetario sviluppato fino al Cosmodromo nell'area naturale e ricreativa di Kattevennen, a nord-est del centro di Genk. Funziona anche come una delle sei porte d'accesso al Parco Nazionale Hoge Kempen. In risposta allo sbarco sulla luna nel 1969, il genkese Lode Vanhoutte avviò i Giovani Ricercatori per Genk. Si dedicavano a lavori di divulgazione scientifica. Molti argomenti furono trattati, ma l'astronomia si rivelò la più interessante e nel 1972 trovarono una casa nella Associazione per l'Astronomia sotto il nome JVS-Descartes. A quel tempo, gli osservatori di Grimbergen e Hove avevano già anni di attività e, grazie alla VVS, e soprattutto per merito di Armand Pien, si mirava a un osservatorio popolare a tutti gli effetti in ogni provincia fiamminga. Si pensò quindi di realizzare il terzo osservatorio popolare fiammingo a Genk.
