Uno dei fenomeni tipici delle valli profonde è che l'acqua non viene solo portata dal ruscello. Dalle ripide pendici scorre acqua piovana e dai fianchi della valle emerge acqua sorgiva. Di conseguenza, ai piedi delle pendici è molto umido e troviamo boschi di sorgente e di palude. L'acqua sorgiva marrone può spesso impiegare centinaia di anni per giungere a destinazione e appare come un rivolo in luoghi più bassi. Poiché è ricca di calcare e ferro e molto povera di nutrienti, possono crescere piante particolari come l'asiatica dorata e il ranuncolo. Il colore marrone dell'acqua sorgiva è dovuto all'ossidazione del ferro con l'ossigeno presente nell'aria.
