Il vecchio Stokkem è vivo e vegeto. Documenti antichi menzionano il paese di Stockheim per la prima volta nel 1181. Forse l'importanza del paese crebbe rapidamente, poiché nel 1244 disponeva già di diritti di città. Fino al XIX secolo, Stokkem aveva una mura con porte cittadine, ma oggi rimane solo il Muro Blu.
