Nel 1149 si parla già di ‘Hertesbergam’. Questo sarebbe derivato da pastori e montagna. Non che qui ci sia una montagna, ma berge deriva da riporre, quindi si trattava di un rifugio per i pastori sulle aride terre sabbiose. La chiesa neoromanica di San Giovanni Evangelista fu costruita nel 1891-1892.
