La striscia di dune a ovest di Mariakerke era un luogo amato dal pittore James Ensor. Era spesso visto lì e aveva un posto fisso dove lavorare. Realizzò vari disegni e acqueforti, e dipinse anche la tela ad olio "Vista su Mariakerke". Ensor già ai suoi tempi sosteneva la protezione della striscia di dune. Come per miracolo, la striscia che va da Mariakerke a Middelkerke, interrotta solo dal piccolo Raversijde, è sopravvissuta. È l'unica striscia di dune aperta rimasta della costa centrale. Probabilmente non sarebbe successo se la piccola chiesetta di dune per cui James Ensor ha lottato tanto non fosse stata in piedi.
