Il nome di questo ampio viale si riferisce all'Expo 58, una delle più riuscite esposizioni universali di sempre. È stata inoltre la sesta esposizione universale ufficiale tenutasi in Belgio e la prima dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Questa esposizione era completamente dedicata alla libertà e al progresso, caratteristiche distintive degli anni cinquanta e sessanta del XX secolo. Più di 42 milioni di persone hanno visitato l'esposizione universale inaugurata dal re Baldovino con un appello alla pace e al progresso sociale ed economico.
