Emden è una città nello stato tedesco della Bassa Sassonia, situata lungo l'Ems. È la città più grande della regione della Frisia orientale e ha il porto marittimo più occidentale della Germania. Come città senza distretto, Emden non appartiene a un Landkreis. La città ha svolto un ruolo importante nella storia olandese come rifugio per i protestanti perseguitati all'inizio della Guerra degli Ottant'anni. Emden sorse attorno all'800 come insediamento commerciale (Amuthon) su un terp lungo l'Ems e divenne nel XII secolo la capitale della contea orientale di Emsgo.
Alla fine del XVI secolo, Emden conobbe un periodo di grande fioritura. A causa del blocco spagnolo dei porti olandesi all'inizio della ribellione olandese, Emden divenne il porto di transhipment più importante del Mare del Nord.
