Schönefeld è un quartiere situato nel nord-est di Lipsia. Dal punto di vista amministrativo, l'area di nuove costruzioni Schönefeld-Ost è oggi un proprio quartiere di Lipsia, mentre l'antica località, insieme a Abtnaundorf, forma il quartiere Schönefeld-Abtnaundorf. Entrambi i quartieri avevano il 31 dicembre 2016 un totale di 22.292 abitanti.
Nel 1270 fu menzionato per la prima volta un villaggio margraviale chiamato Schonenvelt. Dal 1307 fino alla Riforma apparteneva al convento degli Agostiniani di San Tommaso a Lipsia. Nel 1527 la chiesa del villaggio fu ricostruita dopo un incendio. Dopo le devastazioni della Guerra dei Trenta Anni, l'allora proprietario Georg H. von Thümmel fece ricostruire la villa in forme barocche. Il 27 maggio 1738 vi nacque lo scrittore Moritz August von Thümmel. Nel 1747 il consigliere Johann Friedrich Zeumer ereditò la tenuta. Questi la trasferì al marito di sua cugina Christiana Friederika, nata Meurer, il direttore di cancelleria e consigliere Johann Christoph Schmidt.
