Schönefeld es un barrio ubicado en el noreste de Leipzig. Desde el punto de vista administrativo, el área de nueva construcción Schönefeld-Ost es hoy un distrito propio de Leipzig, mientras que la antigua ubicación del lugar junto con Abtnaundorf forma el distrito de Schönefeld-Abtnaundorf. Ambos distritos tenían un total de 22.292 habitantes al 31 de diciembre de 2016.
En 1270 se mencionó por primera vez una aldea margravial llamada Schonenvelt. Desde 1307 hasta la Reforma, perteneció al capítulo de agustinos de San Tomás en Leipzig. En 1527, la iglesia del pueblo fue reconstruida después de un incendio. Tras las devastaciones de la Guerra de los Treinta Años, el entonces propietario Georg H. von Thümmel hizo reconstruir la casa señorial en formas barrocas. El 27 de mayo de 1738 nació allí el escritor Moritz August von Thümmel. En 1747, el consejero del gabinete Johann Friedrich Zeumer heredó la hacienda. Este la heredó a su esposo, el director de la oficina y consejero del gabinete Johann Christoph Schmidt, primo de Christiana Friederika de soltera Meurer.
