Nella comunità amministrativa di Tangermünde del distretto di Stendal erano unite otto comuni per svolgere le loro attività amministrative. Il comune di Schelldorf, originariamente parte della comunità amministrativa, è passato il 27 dicembre 2007 nella comunità amministrativa di Tangerhütte-Land.
La comunità amministrativa di Tangermünde si trovava al margine sud-est dell'Altmark e circondava l'area a nord, ovest e sud della città di Tangermünde in un semicerchio. A est, il fiume Elba costituiva il confine con il distretto di Jerichower Land. L'autorità aveva sede nella città di Tangermünde, che le dava il nome.
