Le chiuse di Datteln appartengono – provenienti dal Reno – all'ultima delle sei fasi del canale Wesel-Datteln al chilometro 59,28 del canale a Datteln-Natrop. Un chilometro a monte, il canale Wesel-Datteln sfocia nel canale Dortmund-Ems presso l'incrocio di Datteln.
La grande chiusa di Datteln è stata costruita nel 1928 e inaugurata nel 1931 insieme al canale. La camera di navigazione ha una lunghezza di 222 m, una larghezza di 12 m, l'altezza di caduta è di 7,5 m e il consumo d'acqua per ciascuna chiusura è di 20.000 m³. Navi con un pescaggio fino a 2,8 m possono essere chiuse. La chiusa è chiusa, sia a monte che a valle, da porte a battente. Queste porte della chiusa sono state rinnovate nel novembre 1993.
