Secondo la tradizione scritturale, a Gerusalemme, la vigilia del Venerdì Santo, si verificò quanto segue: dopo una cena solenne, Gesù andò insieme ai suoi discepoli sul Monte degli Olivi per pregare. Lì, sotto un ulivo, chiese a Dio di allontanare da lui la prossima cattura e la morte in croce. I suoi amici nel frattempo dormivano, invece di pregare e sperare con lui. Gesù si sentiva solo e abbandonato.
