Il Greifenbachstauweiher si trova tra Geyer e Ehrenfriedersdorf nell'Erzgebirge ed è stato originariamente creato per l'industria mineraria. Oggi il lago è utilizzato per la fornitura idrica, per la protezione dalle inondazioni e per il tempo libero, tra cui nuoto, immersioni e navigazione.
Il Greifenbachstauweiher è uno dei più antichi bacini artificiali della Germania. Dopo che intorno al 1380 fu costruito il Röhrgraben di Ehrenfriedersdorf per fornire acqua accumulata dalle miniere di stagno di Ehrenfriedersdorf, il torrente fu probabilmente chiuso per la prima volta nel 1396. Nel 1404 il Grande lago di Geyer o Bacino di Geyer superiore fu ampliato, in modo che nel XV secolo avesse una capacità di 60.000 m³ d'acqua. Sotto la vecchia strada di Geyer verso Jahnsbach si trovavano altri stagni lungo il Greifenbach, il Bacino superiore e quello inferiore di Ratsteich, che sono in parte ancora conservati.
