The Greifenbach Stauweiher is located between Geyer and Ehrenfriedersdorf in the Ore Mountains and was originally created for mining purposes. The lake is now used for utility water supply, flood protection, and recreational activities, including swimming, diving, and boating.
The Greifenbach Stauweiher is one of the oldest reservoirs in Germany. After the Ehrenfriedersdorf Ditch was built around 1380 to supply the tin mines of Ehrenfriedersdorf with inflow water from the Greifenbach, the creek was likely dammed for the first time in 1396. In 1404, the Große Geyersche Teich or Upper Geyersche Protection Pond was expanded, so that by the 15th century, it had a capacity of 60,000 m³ of water. Below the old road from Geyer to Jahnsbach, there were additional ponds on the Greifenbach, the Upper and Lower Ratsteich, which are still partially preserved.
