Il sottomarino è stato messo in servizio nella Royal Navy nel 1963 e ha prestato servizio lì nel Primo Gruppo Sottomarini.
L'Otus è stata utilizzata, tra l'altro, durante la Guerra delle Falkland e nel Golfo Persico. Dopo 28 anni di servizio, l'Otus è stata dismessa nel 1991. Successivamente, il battello è stato acquistato da un imprenditore tedesco. Dopo il trasferimento in Germania, è stato sottoposto a un ripristino esterno alla Volkswerft Stralsund e ha ricevuto una nuova verniciatura nel colore originale. Da allora, l'Otus è visitabile come museo sottomarino "Esperienza Sottomarino" nel porto cittadino di Sassnitz.
