Il Ilz è un affluente sinistro del Danubio lungo circa 40 km nella sezione di nome e quasi 70 km nel tronco principale con i suoi affluenti, situato nella parte sudorientale della Foresta Bavarese.
Il Ilz nasce dal lato tedesco nella zona di confine bayero-boema nel Parco Nazionale della Foresta Bavarese. I suoi fiumi sorgenti, Kleine Ohe, Große Ohe e Mitternacher Ohe, provengono dalla regione tra le montagne di Rachel e Lusen. Si uniscono presso l'Ettlmühle, vicino al villaggio di Eberhardsreuth nel comune di Schönberg. Nei pressi di Fürsteneck, la Wolfsteiner Ohe aumenta il deflusso dell'Ilz a più del doppio. I fiumi sorgenti della Wolfsteiner Ohe sono il Reschbach e il Saußbach, leggermente più grande, il suo principale affluente è l'Osterbach.
