Estrazione di sale
Oggi, nel Holde a Salzbergen, solo un pannello informativo ricorda che il comune porta a ragione il suo nome. Nella speranza di trovare gas, nel 1949/1950 è stata effettuata una perforazione profonda dalla società Elwerath-Erdölwerke.
Non si trovò gas, ma a una profondità di circa 200 m si scoprì un ampio giacimento di sale rock, che si estendeva fino a una profondità di 640 m. In questo contesto si parla anche del "Sella di Salzbergen". Questo giacimento di sale è particolarmente adatto per scopi balneari e per l'estrazione di sale da cucina.

La città di Rheine successivamente acquistò dall'ufficio minerario i diritti di sfruttamento per la salina nel monastero di Bentlage e dal 1959 ha trasportato la salamoia (26%) tramite una condotta da Salzbergen a Bentlage. Tuttavia, nel 1975, lo sfruttamento dovette essere interrotto a causa dei vincoli dell'ufficio minerario.
Fino alla conclusione dell'estrazione, in quest'area sono stati dissolti 9.350 m³ di sale.
