Questa fontana, inaugurata il 6 luglio 1968 , è una creazione dello scultore Hanns Scherl di Wittlich.
L'opera d'arte è composta da due orsi in bronzo a grandezza naturale , posti su una solida base di basalto lavico . Questi orsi simboleggiano lo stemma e il simbolo della città di Bernkastel-Kues.
L'attuale fontana sostituisce una vecchia pompa d'acqua, nota come "Bärenpütz" o "Rauschepütz", che si trovava nello stesso luogo fino al 1899. La pompa originale era dotata di una figura di orso in ghisa, che oggi adorna un balcone in Graacher Straße 25.
Secondo una leggenda locale, il nome "Bernkastel" deriverebbe da "Bärenkessel" , il che spiegherebbe la presenza dell'orso nello stemma della città e in vari luoghi della città.
