Il sentiero Harzer Försterstieg si snoda dalla storica città imperiale di Goslar attraverso Wolfshagen, passando per i luoghi minerari di Lautenthal, Wildemann e Bad Grund fino agli altopiani intorno a Clausthal-Zellerfeld. Prosegue verso sud passando per Buntenbock e Lerbach fino a Riefensbeek-Kamschlacken vicino a Osterode. Si sfiora tre importanti dighe del Westharz: la diga di Granetal, la diga di Innerste e la diga di Söse.
Il sentiero è contrassegnato da numerosi punti panoramici e mette in comunicazione elementi essenziali che caratterizzano il Westharz: una varietà paesaggistica aspra, diverse forme forestali e biotopi, l'industria mineraria storica, l'uso delle acque e la protezione contro le inondazioni, nonché un utilizzo del legno curato e sostenibile in combinazione con la trasformazione di popolamenti arborei non adatti al sito.
Il percorso integra in gran parte il "Innerste Rennstieg" storico, già utilizzato nell'età del bronzo per il trasporto di merci e la trasmissione di notizie.
