Il termine "Alcaine" deriva dall'arabo erq ayu, 'luogo dove nasce una sorgente'. Appare in un documento del XIII secolo come Arcaine.[4]
Un'altra possibile interpretazione è offerta da Robert Pocklington[5] per un altro Alcaine, a Murcia: "se si esaminano i luoghi del toponimo murciano e di altri due della provincia di Almería, si nota che tutti e tre sono località situate accanto a un canalone nel punto in cui questo abbandona una zona di monte o catena montuosa, che si trovano parzialmente racchiusi dalle montagne in questione. Perciò pensa che possa trattarsi dell'arabo ar-rukayn o ar-rukayna «il posticino»". Alcaine era anche citato in precedenza come Arcaine e condivide il tipo di ubicazione con gli altri Alcaines del Sud-est.
