La chiesa è situata in uno dei punti più alti della città , dove gli scavi archeologici hanno rinvenuto i primi insediamenti della città. Appartiene al gruppo di parrocchie fondate subito dopo la conquista castigliana della città nel 1248.
La chiesa attuale fu costruita verso la metà del XIV secolo , secondo i parametri gotico-mudejar del periodo storico in cui venne edificata. Alla fine del XVI secolo o all'inizio del XVII secolo fu ricostruito l'intero coro della chiesa, fu ampliato il presbiterio e furono create due cappelle laterali: la Cappella di San Giovanni Nepomuceno (poi dei Villalpando) e la Cappella delle Maestre . Nel XVIII secolo alla chiesa furono aggiunte le cappelle della navata evangelica e furono apportate varie riforme.
