Nel suo libro 'De Bekeerlinge', Stefan Hertmans descrive la posizione importante di Narbonne: 'Due grandi strade romane si incontravano a Narbonne - la Via Aquitania, che andava verso ovest, e la Via Domitia, che andava verso est. La città si trovava quindi in un importante incrocio e crebbe rapidamente. Per secoli, gli arabi l'avevano considerata il loro estremo avamposto in Gallia. Non volevano rinunciare a Narbonne. Ancora nel decimo secolo, lo geografo arabo Zuhri scrive che i cristiani dovevano fare marcia indietro se non volevano essere decapitati e che potevano combattere fino alla fine dei tempi, ma che non avrebbero riottenuto questa città.
