Narbonne

In his book 'The Convert' Stefan Hertmans describes the important position of Narbonne: 'Two major Roman roads met in Narbonne - the Via Aquitania, which ran west, and the Via Domitia, which ran east. This positioned the city at a significant crossroads, and it grew rapidly. For centuries, the Arabs regarded it as their farthest point in Gaul. They were reluctant to give up Narbonne. Even in the tenth century, the Arab geographer Zuhri wrote that the Christians had to turn back here if they did not want to be beheaded, and that they could fight to the end of time if necessary but that they would not reclaim this city.
